Title of the talk: "Molecular studies of human lymphoma":

Date: 25 May 2007 (Friday)

Time: 4.00 to 5.00 p.m

Venue: Lecture Theatre, basement, Li Ka Shing Specialist Clinic, North Wing, Prince of Wales Hospital, Shatin

“The study and diagnosis of human lymphoma was revolutionised in the 1980’s by the definition of a range of immunohistological markers, and this provided the basis for the current classification of these disorders. However most of these markers were identified more than 15 years ago – what novel markers exist today and how can they be used to improve understanding/management of lymphoma.

One lymphoma category about which much remains to be learnt is Hodgkin’s disease, of which two subtypes exist. Recent data have shed light on these categories and in particular on the down-regulation of B cell-associated molecules. To what extent do epigenetic modifications account for these changes?”

Prof. David Y. Mason and Dr Teresa Marafioti both work in the Nuffield Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, University of Oxford. Prof. Mason is the Director of the Leukemia Research Fund Immunodiagnostics Unit and a pioneer in HLDA (Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigen) research. Prof Mason has been involved in molecular studies of human lymphomas for many years, from the identification and production of numerous monoclonal antibodies (such as antibodies to CD3, CD19, CD20, CD45, CD79b, BCL2, ALK etc.) which are used worldwide, to the development of laboratory diagnostic methods including APAAP, double and triple immuno-labeling. Dr Marafioti specializes in micromanipulation/single-cell PCR, and has recently investigated the underlying genetic “causes” of lymphomas through molecular and immunobiological profiling of human lymphomas (e.g. by studying intracellular signaling molecules in normal and malignant lymphoid cells).
